MY GUIDE TO: BLOGGING PHOTOGRAPHY

Saturday, 24 August 2013

When it comes to blogging, it's safe to say that most of us with adore taking the photographs more than anything else. I am not a professional nor a photography student, just a self-taught obsessor. Cringing at the long gone days where I would use a 4 Megapixel phone camera to snap the polishes I had been loving, I soon realised photos speak 1000 words, and do products more justice than my ramblings.

I moved onto using an old AA Battery camera, which got very annoying and cost a lot of battieries, and it wasn't great at focusing either. My dad wanted to sell that, so it was time for me to buy my very first own camera. I skipped on over to Currys or Comet (I'm unsure), and snapped up (see what I did there, aye?... not funny Lauren. Haha) a FujiFilm one which I still use now for some pictures, and does wonders in natural light - AKA my windowsill, but struggles anywhere else. Nowadays it's a mix between that and my dads fancy Canon 550D DSLR Camera (used for this post), which I adore and hope one day I can get one of my own. I must say, this post was slightly inspired by Zoe's from Zoella.

You want to steer clear from having any kinds of clutter in the background. We are all guilty of it, but it really takes away the focus point for the product, causing all kinds of distractions. If you have a nice candle burning in the background, of the packaging from a product etc. in the back, its pretty acceptable, and we can excuse than from being branded as 'clutter'.

I never really edit pictures in this way for my blog unless it is for an 'About Me' page or a tag post, lifestyle post etc. It does have a really nice effect, but I feel like if you were to look at a review and the images were all edited of the product and swatches, it wouldn't be very true to life at all, and your readers wouldn't be able to see much at all about the product.

Using flash can be risky. If used in the correct way, you can brighten up your pictures and sometimes show a burst of colour, I won't tell you how to do this, just experiment in different lighting etc. Secondly, since blogging for quite a while, I now cannot stand photos out of focus, even the slightest amount. No-one likes to see an image without even being able to see what the packaging looks like... its a pet hate of mine.

One tip I would give to anyone, is not to use stock photos, unless you have been told by a company, or you are using them to make a wishlist type post. It is much more interesting and better looking if you use a photo you have taken, rather than using something you have found online in its white background looking very computer-generated.

Hands down, I will always take natural lighting over artificial, because most cameras will want to whip out the flash, and with most makeup packaging, the plastic can flashback, and it looks very bad. It also picks up any shimmer or fallout in the packaging which you cannot see in the natural light. Always use the natural light when it is available guys!

There is a reason we have a macro/'flower' mode on our cameras, and the closer-up, the better! Taking a picture from far away also means you have clutter and the focus point has been stolen by some random gathering in the background. Close up, you can really see textures, and colours well too. Just make sure if you are going for a close up - it needs to be in focus.
So, that was it! My mini guide to blogging photography. I love taking photos, and I am hoping this will have helped some of you to be more adventerous with your photos! It really is all about experimenting. As I said, I am not a professional or a photography student, I am just self-taught, and am currently taking part in a mini 10 week photography course until I start my chosen GSCE options, basically just learning some extra camera and photoshop skills.

NEW LAYOUT

Sunday, 18 August 2013

After blogging on this blog for a few months, and constantly faffing around here and there with widgets, banners, and sidebars, I realised I was just not happy with my blog layout- and I wasn't prepared to spend the money I didn't even have on a full blown fancy layout.
I had been following a lovely blogger who creates blog designs for a while now, and they had just released a free simple blog template download, so I was right on it, and I have that all here for your eyes to see. I am hoping I can spend more time on quality posts rather than juggling that with tinkering with the layout. I love the simplicity of this layout, but it also adds a nice pop of colour to the layout. I am a little obsessed.
I'm hoping this will encourage me to think up amazing ideas, and really get into detail with my (admittedly at the moment rather slacking) blog posts.

It is always good to keep your eyes peeled in the blogging world, because you never know what you might stumble upon!

*UPDATE - I changed it, again... oops. But I am very happy with my layout now so I don't plan  on changing it again*

Laptop Dilemma!

Sunday, 14 July 2013

Hi guys!
If you are here for a beauty review or an OOTD, unfortunately that is not what you will be getting today. My dear old little laptop has been having some issues before with the battery and charger, and now it has decided to die completely without me being able to recharge it. The worst part is that I have all of my blogging photos on there, and so now I cannot do a post unless I take a lot more photos which I currently don't have time for. I have ordered a new charger and battery, and so this issue should be sorted in no more than about 5 days and there will b a post shortly. I will try and do a tag or something to fill the gap, but I hope you understand my issue!

The best I could do was find a cool quote slightly related to this post. The image is from HERE

Maybe this will teach me a lifelong lesson to backup my photos and files onto a memory stick or to somewhere else. Oops.. Everyone makes mistakes aye?
Well, that's it for today. I hope to se you very soon depending on when the bits I need arrive in the post.
Thanks for reading guys,
Lauren x

Goodbye GFC...

Saturday, 29 June 2013

Hi guys, just a quick update!

I am a little exhausted, I spent the day with my family at the coast today, and also had a rather successful bargainous haul, so look forward to that tomorrow.
85 of you now follow my blog. 85. I thought I would get about 10 followers on this blog, I really do thank you all. But, I know that at least 30 of you will be missing out on my blog as of monday, as I only have 55 followers on Bloglovin', and good old Google Reader is soon off, so please make sure you click the button below to follow me - I would hate for you to miss out!

Thanks, Lauren x

PUBLICISE YOUR BLOG / ADVERTISE WITH ME

Sunday, 16 June 2013

Hi guys!
I am now pleased to tell you that I am selling advertising space on my blog. This will be a way for me to earn money to support my blog, and for you to also publicise your blog. I have excellent rates, much more affordable than some blogs, and I have quite a few places available, Go on! Be the first to advertise with me!
I spend a lot of time on my blog, and to get some of that hard work back, to help me buy products, work on my layout, and more, it would be very much appreciated.
Everything is fair, and all ads are rotated throughout the 30 day cycle. I would really appreciate if you could all go over to the 'Sponsor', and not all of you have to purchase anything, but just have a browse, and think to yourself 'can I spare a few coins to help out someones blog, and get MINE noticed?'.
Some people are having problems viewing the Sponsor page and getting the widget to load, and to solve this, simple either use a different browser, or click the little button at near the url bar which looks like a page broken in half.
Thanks very much,
I couldn't run my blog without you guys.

Cyprus

Thursday, 23 May 2013

Hi guys!
Sometimes, we need to relax and have no stress for a few days.
I did just that in this past few days when I visited Ayia Napa in Cyprus for 10 days. It was great.
The B-E-A-UTIFUL view from my hotel room!
Besides the fact that I witnessed kids eating their own bogeys on lilos in the middle of the pool, I think I broke my toe, and that 3 times we ordered drinks, something went wrong - the good points definitely outweighed the bad on this holiday.
Looking a little damaged after a few days..

This kept me company on the plane! See what I did there?
I've tanned up, besides wearing factor 50 SPF, and now the Maybelline BB Cream matches me. I'm happy. I'm not one to burn, I just go brown. I also bought some great presents for my friends, and also for myself - I'm a sucker for tourist shops, and I have no problem with buying cheap tat at times, I find it fun.
Over my holiday, I got to my goal of 75 followers, only to remember that GFC is soon to be leaving, so click that bloglovin' button over there at the right, if you would like to stay up to date with The Beau Bow!
Flowers in the middle of the motorway?
We hired a car for 3 days, and saw many, many sights. We went to the mountains in Troodos, and we visited the capital - Nicosia for a day, and also crossed over to the Turkish side of the country, it was fun. We also explored Ayia Napa a bit, visiting a few pretty beaches, whilst trying not to get caught up with some of the people who were on their path to only one place - the clubbing square. I avoided that area, we walked through once, but only at a safe hour, where there wasn't much going on.
It was HOT.
The hotel was lovely, and it was my first all inclusive experience. It was great. I could walk up to the pool bar, the restaurant buffet, or the snack bar, or anywhere in the hotel that served food/drinks, and get it without incurring any costs. The staff were so friendly! I spent quite a lot of unexpected time in the pool, because of the extraordinary temperatures, reaching up to 32 degrees one day!
Overall, I had a great holiday, and now, even with not a lot of sleep due to a late night flight home, I am ready to start posting again!
I hope to do more of these 'lifestyle' kind of posts, as I really enjoyed writing this one - let me know if that is something you would like to see!
Where is your favourite place to go on holiday?

Off on Holiday - 10 Days of No Posts?

Saturday, 11 May 2013

Hi guys!
As you may already know, I am off on holiday today/tomorrow, and I am really quite excited about it. With all the stress of packing and last minute rushes to the shops, I haven't had time to write any posts to publish while I am there or to have any time to organise guest posts.
Then I sat, and thought to myself... I want this to be a holiday, full of relaxation and stress free. Nothing like tapping my foot in the hotel lobby while waiting to try and publish a post using the WiFi, or trying to manage an email inbox full of bloggers wanting to guest post.
So, I hope you understand, that we all need a break, and I will be back very soon (10 days!), and I should be posting then!
Would you like to see a 'lifestyle' type post if I collect lots of pictures?
Thanks for reading, and if you are new here, please follow, I am trying to get to 75 by the time I am back!

Just a sneaky peak of an OOTD coming in the next couple of weeks!

New Layout + Logo?

Sunday, 5 May 2013

Hi guys! If you are a frequent reader of my blog, you may or may not have noticed, that my layout and logo has changed! I have spent yesterday and this morning tweaking with things on the layout, to make it look more professional, and I am really pleased with the effect!
I wanted a simple logo, as I was so used to having one with the coloured background. The white is more easy on the eye, which I like.
I also have made most of the things on my blog a browny/'sepia' effect, which normally I would avoid, but I wanted by blog to be neutral, so it would compliment the pictures on my posts.
Let me know what you think of all this new layout and logo stuff on my blog, what you have seen before, was only temporary until I finally found something I liked - and I think I found it!
Anything that changes on my blog from now on, will be only minor little tweaks, nothing that will make a huge difference.
Thanks for reading, leave your thoughts below!
